Raw MDF

MDF (medium density fibre board) is versatile, easy to maintain, and extremely hard-wearing. Made up of fine particles bonded together with a resin, basically sawdust and glue, fused together under pressure and heat. The close texture can be planed and shaped with a router. The surface is smooth, making it good for veneering or painting.

MDF sheeting is the workhorse of commercial shopfitters and furniture manufacturers alike.

Boasting all the beauty of natural timber with few of the drawbacks. Numerous colours and finishes are available from our Material Suppliers on our website.

At cost-efficient prices, take advantage of MDF board for quality finishes across your shelving, partitioning, door or cupboard panels needs and more.

Simply let the excellent strength, stability, surface smoothness and edge profile of MDF and laminated MDF shine without worrying about the quality of the cut or the fit. We'll cut out the stress and take care of the rest.

Particle Board or Chipboard

Particle board is cheaper, denser and more uniform than conventional wood and plywood. It is substituted for all wood materials when cost is more important than strength and appearance. However, Particle Board can be made more attractive by painting or the use of wood veneers or melamine coating onto surfaces that will be visible. Though it is denser than conventional wood, it is the lightest and weakest type of fibreboard.

Different grades of particleboard have different densities, with higher density connoting greater strength and greater resistance to failure of screw fasteners.

A major disadvantage of particleboard is that it is very prone to expansion and discoloration due to moisture, particularly when it is not covered with paint or another sealer. Therefore, it is rarely used outdoors or in places where there are high levels of moisture, except for some bathrooms, kitchens and laundries, where it is commonly used as an underlayment.

The advantages of using particleboard over veneer core plywood is it is more stable, much cheaper to buy, and somewhat more convenient to use.

Material Suppliers usually coat Particle Board with a thin layer of plastic, veneer or melamine to provide a decorative cleanable surface.

Raw Plywood

Plywood is a sheet material manufactured from thin layers or "plies" of wood veneer that are glued together with adjacent layers having their woodgrain rotated up to 90 degrees to one another. It is an engineered wood from the family of manufactured boards which includes MDF and particle board. It is an incredibly versatile, strong, sustainable material for furniture and formwork alike.

This alternation of the grain is called cross graining and has several important benefits:

There is usually an odd number of plies, so that the sheet is balanced—this reduces warping. Because plywood is bonded with grains running against one another and with an odd number of composite parts, it is very hard to bend it perpendicular to the grain direction of the surface ply.

From made to measure cabinets to show panels, it’s a favourite of commercial shopfitters, kitchen or furniture manufacturers where an MDF solution is not required, but it requires precision cutting to truly bring its best qualities to life.

Material Suppliers usually apply a final layer of ply with a veneer or a finish to make it look like real wood.
